Draco Malfoy Tree

In 1980, David chose to draw this tree in the New College Cloisters having been chosen from all the architectural students to do the annual architectural drawing at the Ohio State summer program in Oxford England at New College.

Little did he know that decades later, this tree was to appear in a Harry Potter film.

David de Hilster drew this tree in 1980, decades before the famous Harry Potter scene

The college’s grounds and cloisters have been used as filming locations for several scenes in the Harry Potter series. The massive oak tree, featured in the scene where Draco Malfoy is transformed into a ferret, is one of the most recognizable elements of New College in the films. The setting also includes the scene where Harry Potter navigates through students wearing “Potter Stinks” badges, adding to its cinematic appe

The tree some 46 years later after de Hilster’s drawing – you can see the same marks in the trunk.

There is a Second Copy

When David finished the drawing, he did not want to give the drawing up, so he did something he had never done before: made a copy. He sat down at his desk to make a copy of the drawing he just did.

Somewhere in Canada, someone has the other nearly identical drawing. This one currently resides with the de Hilster family in it’s private collection.
