Commissioned Portrait Work
David de Hilster has returned to doing art on a regular basis to the delight of many of his fans with his new style he calls “intellectual graffiti”. Known during the last few decades for his occasional pencil drawings and his graphic ads, his new digital works are a new and exciting direction for the artist. It has been three decades since he was seriously dedicated to his art, selling to private collectors in Southern California where he was one of the new young artists selected by the Art & Rental Gallery of the world-famous Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Now residing in Delray Beach Florida, a city known as an artist’s haven, de Hilster is now doing commissioned work in the form of portraits. Although de Hilster is known for his exquisite pencil drawings, his newer work which he calls “intellectual graffiti” is becoming a favorite for his patrons. David takes a photograph of a person or persons, digitizes them, and weaves them into a dynamic, colorful composition with words, shapes, and elements from overlayed onto the portrait with meaningful symbolism and words that are important to his clients and to the artist.
Intellectual Graffiti
When asked about why he calls his style “Intellectual Graffiti“, David explains:
“Being a scientist and an artist, I want to make a viewer have to use their brain in order to understand my art. I don’t want to make it easy for them. They have to work to read a word or phrase. The more they concentrate on the piece, the more they find. I also often put ‘easter eggs’ into a work that are hidden in plain sight.
I layer onto reality things that are meaningful to me and the subject. This includes actual computer code from the AI computer programming language I helped invent, to computer code I use to draw what my father and I call the ‘Four Universal Motions in Physics‘. The four universal motions which are physical models for light, gravity, magnetism, and electricity use computer code that I write to render the little particles that are generated on my works.
I also include words and images that are important to the person or subject I am working on. On top of that, I use a digital canvas to draw graffiti lines and shapes and even cartoons, weaving it all into a dynamic composition that has to be balanced, and beautiful – no different that when I do my pencil drawings”
David de Hilster is now accepting commissions. If you are interested in an audience with David to talk about a possible commissioned work, please contact art@dehilster.com or text 310-991-5744.
